Acknowledgement of Country

We acknowledge that we are on land of the Kaurna people, the traditional custodians of the Adelaide Plains.We are awed that they celebrate the religious significance of place, plant and all living creatures; and that care for the earth is implanted in their law. We honour them and also delight in the sacred in our midst. We pray that in the power of the Holy Spirit we might work together for reconciliation and justice in this land

Matthew 9:35 – 10:8 NRSV

Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease and every sickness. 36When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; 38therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest.’

10 Then Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to cure every disease and every sickness. 2These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon, also known as Peter, and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; 3Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax-collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, the one who betrayed him.

5 These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: ‘Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans, 6but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7As you go, proclaim the good news, “The kingdom of heaven has come near.” 8Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment.

Jesus mission and ministry was to share the Love of God. He recognized that he could not do it alone, that the disciples were needed to join in and do the same. If there was to be a fulfillment of Jesus’s mission. Jesus gave them, the disciples, the authority to go and do all in his name. Jesus though knew that they were at this point in time still small in numbers so he limited their mission field. Later on the mission field was expanded. We are the disciples, we have been authorized to share the Love of God, as Jesus himself shared the Love of God. Although, we need to recognize we are few in number. There is a lot we can do but we can’t do it all. There needs to be an acceptance of our limits and be strategic with the resources we have. We cannot harvest all the fields but we can harvest the field God has placed before us. That begs the questions,

What is the harvest field before us?

What is your task in the harvest?

How can you share the Love of God?

Almighty God,
from whom all thoughts of truth and peace proceed:
Kindle, we pray you,
in the hearts of all people the true love of peace;
and guide with your pure and peaceable wisdom
those who take counsel for the nations of the earth;
that in tranquillity your kingdom may go forward,
till the earth be filled with knowledge of your love:
In the power of your Spirit.
